Kooch-i-ching
is rather unique in the world of camping in that it offers campers the
opportunity to participate in both wilderness trips and a full spectrum
of base-camp activities. Each young man who comes to Kooch spends a
portion of his time on one or more wilderness trips and the remainder
involved in our in-camp program.
In-Camp Program
Kooch-i-ching's
in-camp program includes three distinct elements: (1) an instructional
program that offers individual and group instruction in a dozen or more
different areas; (2) a wide variety of age-group unit activities and
(3) a broad spectrum of evening programs and special events that
involve every age-group division on the island.
Instructional Program
Our
instructional program normally occupies the morning hours, six days a
week. At the beginning of each session, each camper builds his own
program by selecting six activities that he wants to pursue from more
than a dozen possibilities including:
Archery Taught using the Junior Olympic program by National Archery Association certified instructors using recurve bows(click here).
Swimming
– Taught at beginning and advanced levels by American Red Cross
certified instructors. Campers who do not pass the camp's swimming test
administered at the beginning of each session must take swimming until
they have demonstrated proficiency as a swimmer.
Woodsmanship
– Kooch's rather unique woodsmanship program teaches camping skills and
survival skills, how to use the tools of the woodsman and a host of
other things that an outdoorsman should know.
Athletics
– Our Athletics Department offers instructions in a variety of basic
athletic skills and a number of team sports including soccer,
basketball and softball.
Riflery – Taught using .22
caliber rifles and the NRA course of instruction by certified
instructors. Older campers also learn how to safely handle and shoot a
shotgun.
Weight Training – Kooch offers instruction in weight training and
conditioning to Intermediates and Seniors. Our Weight Training Center includes free weights and a variety of machines.
Sailing
– Taught at all levels of proficiency using Sunfish and Capri 14.2's.
With at least several summers of focused effort, a camper can earn
distinction as a "Master Sailor."
Climbing – Our Climbing
Department teaches the basics of climbing using a multi-walled climbing
tower and a bouldering wall. All high climbing is fully belayed.
Tennis – We teach beginning and advanced tennis on two hard surface courts located on our island.
Indian Dancing
– One of the most unique and popular aspects of our program. Taught at
beginning and advanced levels. Our dancers present two spectacular,
fully costumed shows each summer.
Indian Crafts – Our
Indian Crafts program offers campers the opportunity to make costume
items for Indian Dancing or do a wide variety of other Native American
related crafts.
Fishing – Kooch has a Fishing Department
that teaches campers how to fish using different kinds of gear, what to
do with the fish they catch and even how to carve and paint their own
lures.

Wilderness Trips
Kooch-i-ching's
wilderness trips program includes three types of trips: canoe trips,
backpacking trips and climbing trips. Depending on the age of campers
these trips run in length from 7-21 days. Kooch canoe trips enjoy a
national reputation for unsurpassed excellence. We have been sending
canoe trips into the Canadian wilderness for over 75 years and during
that time have refined canoe cruising to an art form. Most of our canoe
trips take place in Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, but we sometimes
send trips to Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Kooch
backpacking and climbing trips normally go to Montana or Wyoming, but
we sometimes send "mountain" trips to Colorado, Idaho or the Canadian
Rockies. Kooch climbers usually spend a couple of days hiking into a
good climbing area, spend 5-6 days climbing and then hike back out.
Preps
will embark on a 5-day canoe trip during the 3-week first session. They
will take a one day break-in trip and a seven to eight day canoe trip
during the 4-week second session. Juniors have the option of a ten day
canoe or backpacking trip each 4-week session. Intermediates take a
fourteen day trip each 4-week session and may choose a canoe trip, or a
backpacking trip. An Intermediate/Senior climbing trip will be offered
during the first 4-week session. Seniors have the option of a fourteen
day canoe, backpacking or climbing trip during the first half of the
summer and go on a twenty-one day Hudson Bay canoe trip during the
second half of the summer.
